What is the recommended dosage of Wegovy for weight loss?

Wegovy is available in 5 different doses. The starting dose of the Wegovy injection is 0.25 mg, taken once a week. This dose should be taken for 4 weeks, allowing your body to get used to it and build up a tolerance to the Wegovy injection.

Starting from week 5, the dosage is increased to 0.5 mg once a week for 4 weeks. After this, the dose will increase to 1.0 mg until you have reached the maximum dose of 2.4 mg. You will continue for the rest of your treatment at this dose (or the maximum tolerated dose).

The dosing schedule will, therefore, be as follows:

  • Weeks 1-4: 0.25 mg once a week
  • Weeks 5-8: 0.5 mg once a week
  • Weeks 9-12: 1 mg once a week
  • Weeks 13-16 (or later): 1.7 mg once a week
  • Weeks 17 onwards (or later): 2.4 mg once a week

Who Should NOT Use Wegovy?
Wegovy (semaglutide) is not suitable for everyone. You should not use Wegovy if any of the following apply to you:

  • You are under 18 or over 75 years old.
  • You are pregnant, trying to conceive, or actively breastfeeding.
  • You have liver or kidney issues.
  • You have a history of cardiac problems or pancreatitis.
  • You are a Type 1 diabetic or are taking diabetic medications that may cause hypoglycemia (e.g., insulin or sulphonylureas).
  • You have a history of eating disorders.
  • You are currently taking other weight loss medications or diabetes drugs in the GLP-1 class (e.g., Victoza, Ozempic, Saxenda, Trulicity).

If you fall into any of these categories, our healthcare professionals will guide you toward alternative options better suited to your needs.

Where Should I Inject Wegovy?

Wegovy is administered as a subcutaneous injection, meaning it is injected just under the skin. There are a few areas of the body where you can safely and effectively inject Wegovy:

  • Thighs
  • Abdomen (excluding the area within 5 cm of the navel)
  • Upper Arms

Select a site that feels most comfortable for you. If you notice any irritation or marks at the injection site, simply move slightly away from that spot. You don’t need to choose a completely new area; relocating the injection point by about 1 cm from the previous spot is sufficient.

When injecting into the abdomen, ensure a safe distance of at least 5 cm from your belly button to avoid sensitive areas. Always rotate your injection sites to minimize irritation and promote healing.

What Are the Side Effects of Wegovy Weight Loss Injections?

Like any medication, Wegovy may cause side effects, especially as your body adapts to the treatment. Some of the most commonly reported side effects in clinical trials include:

  • Nausea
  • Headaches
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal discomfort or constipation
  • Vomiting

These symptoms are generally mild and tend to diminish over time as your body becomes accustomed to Wegovy. If side effects persist or become bothersome, it’s important to consult your healthcare provider for further advice or possible adjustments to your treatment plan.

Wegovy vs. Other Weight Loss Injections: A Comprehensive Comparison

Wegovy vs. Ozempic: Understanding the Differences

Wegovy and Ozempic both contain the same active ingredient, Semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist that mimics the effects of a natural hormone responsible for regulating appetite and blood sugar levels. Despite their similarities, the two medications serve distinct purposes:

  • Ozempic: Specifically licensed for managing type 2 diabetes, Ozempic improves blood glucose control while also promoting weight loss as a secondary benefit.
  • Wegovy: Designed explicitly for weight management, Wegovy is licensed for both weight loss and weight maintenance in individuals with obesity or overweight-related conditions.

Dosing and Administration

Both medications are administered as once-weekly injections, making them convenient options for long-term treatment. However, they differ in available dosages:

  • Ozempic: Offered in three doses—0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, and 1.0 mg. These doses are primarily tailored for diabetes management but also result in modest weight loss for some individuals.
  • Wegovy: Available in a wider range of five doses—0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1.0 mg, 1.7 mg, and 2.4 mg. The higher doses, especially the 2.4 mg, are specifically optimized for effective weight loss and maintenance.

Why Choose Wegovy for Weight Management?

Wegovy stands out as a more targeted option for those seeking significant and sustained weight loss. With its broader dosing options and specific licensing for weight management, it offers a tailored approach that allows for gradual dose escalation, reducing potential side effects and maximizing results.

Which Is Right for You?

The choice between Wegovy and Ozempic depends on your individual needs and health goals. While Ozempic can aid in weight loss as part of diabetes management, Wegovy is the preferred choice for those primarily focused on weight loss and maintenance.
